PCBA Test Jigs: Cost, Coverage, and Reuse

PCBA Test Jigs: Cost, Coverage, and Reuse

A fixture purchase reaches beyond the batch on today's schedule. Perhaps the next order will use a revised board, or the product will move to a second factory. Will the jig still work? For an OEM planning repeat PCBA orders, that question belongs beside the initial price. Test scope, station cycle, and future changes all matter before money goes into tooling.

What the Fixture Actually Buys You

A PCBA test jig holds the assembly against its test connections, often spring probes or cable plugs. What constitutes a pass is another matter. For that, the station needs measuring equipment, a program, and limits agreed for the product. Ask which of these the fixture quotation actually includes.

Repetition makes loose test leads inconvenient. A technician might tolerate reconnecting them for a few prototypes; doing it for the next batch is a different proposition. A jig fixes the contact arrangement, although the operator still needs instructions for running the sequence and dealing with failures.

Assembly and fixture development need a shared definition of the test. At PCBA Store, we offer functional testing to customer procedures and can make fixtures to customer requirements. When we discuss PCB fixtures for functional testing, bring the operating sequence: what goes into the board, what should come out, and under which conditions?

Coverage Depends on Access and Measurements

Coverage needs a fault list behind it. Consider an industrial controller that boots successfully while one output channel remains untested. A green indicator for the boot sequence tells the buyer nothing about that channel. Put the channel on the test list and identify the measurement that will exercise it.

Electrical Access

An in-circuit test needs somewhere to connect. A node drawn on the schematic is no help if a tall component blocks the probe on the real board. Give the fixture designer the populated layout during development, while moving a test point is still an option.

Functional Conditions

A functional test puts the board to work. For a sensor input, specify the stimulus and the expected response; for an output stage, specify any load needed during the measurement. Otherwise, the station developer has to guess what the request to check operation means.

Our assembly services include ICT and functional testing, with AOI and X-ray inspection also available. For in-circuit test coverage, ask for the intended checks against the agreed fault list. Some concerns will belong to inspection or functional testing instead. Record anything left outside the production test so a pass is interpreted correctly.

Fixture Price and Cost per Tested Board

The development bill needs an itemized scope. Is the quoted amount for the fixture hardware alone? Does it also cover programming, debugging, and acceptance trials? Check whether instruments are included or expected to be available at the factory. Without those answers, a low fixture price and a complete station price are not meaningful alternatives.

The station cycle includes the operator's work. Time a board from loading through unloading, including cable connections and result recording. Use this observed cycle for capacity planning, with troubleshooting considered separately. Timing only the software leaves the handling work out of the calculation.

The quantity used in the calculation should be defensible. Divide development cost over the orders reasonably expected before a substantial redesign, not an indefinite product lifetime. Compare that result with a simpler test arrangement. The economical choice will depend on the work involved in this particular board.

A practical cost comparison should separate:

· One-time fixture hardware and program development.

· Operator time and station occupancy for each board.

· Wear parts, troubleshooting, and scheduled checks.

· Revalidation after board or firmware changes.

Reuse Across Batches and Board Revisions

A board revision can break compatibility without changing the outline. Moving one test pad may be enough. So can keeping the pad in place but assigning its pin a different function in firmware. Review the jig when the board changes, before assigning the revised batch to the old station.

Mechanical and Electrical Compatibility

The compatibility review covers physical fit and electrical mapping. Compare locating holes, component clearances, and probe positions against the new board. Then follow each affected connection through the wiring. With a modular fixture, it may be possible to replace the board-specific plate and retain the base.

Software and Ownership

The software version is part of the test setup. Suppose a limit changes between batches: yesterday's failure might now pass on precisely the same hardware. Record the authorized limits and program version with the board and firmware revisions, so production knows which combination to run.

A second factory needs the working setup, not just the fixture. Settle access to instrument information, wiring, software, and setup instructions while development is being agreed. Otherwise, ownership of the hardware may leave you with substantial work before the receiving site can use it.

Acceptance Before the First Volume Run

Acceptance needs evidence of rejection as well as acceptance. A known-good board helps check the station, but it cannot demonstrate detection of a missing signal or wrong value. Agree on suitable fault samples or safe simulations and the results expected from them. Keep these controlled checks identified so they cannot be confused with normal shipment units.

A pass after reloading deserves investigation. Was the original failure caused by poor probe contact, or is the board intermittent? Retain both results and resolve the cause. Repeated retries with no record make a troublesome fixture look healthier than it is.

The release record belongs in the test agreement too. Decide how to associate a board with its result, test version, and any retest. Our discussion of PCBA test jig requirements should cover these records before production begins, while the procedure is still being agreed.

A Fixture Worth Keeping

A fixture is worth keeping when it continues to test the intended boards under the agreed conditions. Approve its scope with the cycle time and revision assumptions visible. The next batch should not require a fresh investigation into what the station was built to do.

For a repeat build with PCBA Store, contact us with the intended test procedure and the board revisions the fixture needs to support.

FAQ

What Does a Test Jig Do in PCBA Production?

It holds the assembly in position for testing and connects it to the equipment. What happens next depends on the instruments and program. Specify those checks when ordering the fixture, rather than assuming the physical jig defines them.

Is a Test Jig the Same as an ICT Tester?

They are separate parts of the setup. The ICT tester performs measurements; the jig provides the board connection. A jig can also be built for functional testing, so ask what equipment and procedure it is intended to support.

Can One Jig Test Several Board Revisions?

It may, but check each revision before scheduling the batch. Fit is only part of the review: pad functions and test software must still agree with the changed board. The required work might range from a program update to replacement of the board-specific fixture parts.

Why Is There No Universal Fixture Price?

The price depends on access, signal count, instruments, loading method, software, and validation effort. Compare defined test scopes rather than treating every item described as a fixture as the same purchase.

Does a Passing Result Prove Complete Product Reliability?

No. It confirms that the board met the specified test limits under the tested conditions. Reliability qualification and performance outside those conditions require their own evidence and should not be inferred from a production pass.
